Misc Rants
Nolan is A HACK and Overrated Director.
I’m not a movie guy. Let’s get this out of the way. That’s not to say I don’t appreciate the classics. Even some of the higher cinema stuff like Stalker, Aguirre: Wrath of God, Kagemusha, Das Boot, I even watch the entire 9 hour trilogy called The Human Condition. I like some blockbusters too, The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, Excalibur, etc. I like Westerns too. Not a fan of horror but that’s just me. The point is, I know a good movie when I see one but I’m far from anyone who could be considered a respectable film critic. There’s a reason why I don’t have a film section on this website because I’m just not a film guy. But I know an overrated film maker when I see one and Nolan is one such example. If you think I’m going to be speaking like I’m misinformed, you are gravely mistaken.
I haven’t seen all his films but I’ve seen the ones that are most associated with him. I don’t care for capeshit or batman but The Dark Knight was one film that was floating around the mainstream at the time so it was unavoidable. The only way I can describe it is a realistic capeshit movie with modern terrorism edge. The Joker was an interesting villain in this film but only because he is a meme. Gamers in particular attached themselves to him because “as gamers, one of the most oppressed groups in society, live in a society, we live in a society that treats us like trash and that bitch Veronica refuses to add me on Xbox Live, so now billions must die.” It’s one of the earliest moments of “He’s just like me fr fr” so to speak. I don’t have a problem with the film but I wouldn’t call it my favorite either. It exists within it’s own bubble though it’s entirely responsible for al those poor Honda Civics, Suburus, Taurus G2Cs, and Playstation 3s being defiled by crappy hack 2008 Joker themes. I can’t take this film seriously.
Then there’s Inception. A ripoff of the Japanese animated film Paprika. That film is single highhandedly responsible for making all movie trailers and vidya trailers have that BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR bass drop to try to entice some tension in the film. I don’t have a problem with Hans Zimmer but damn, what a mistake. That’s all I have to say about that.
The Dark Knight Rises. The opening scene is all you need to see. I’ll post it for you:
It’s a meme for a reason. It’s proof that Nolan is not good at writing. This was a cash grab to cash in on the hype and fame of The Dark Knight. People remember the memes behind the film more than the actual film itself.
I didn’t watch Interstellar. I don’t like Space movies. They are unrealistic and frankly dumb. No human could survive in space with all that radiation and extreme temperatures that will either freeze you to death or cook you alive. We’ll never have a star traveling civilization as a species and I’d like to see someone prove me to otherwise. Redditards love this movie so all the more reason for me not to watch it.
Now Dunkirk was something that could have been up my alley. More like up my ass. I didn’t see it in theaters but I say it on an Ipod Nano as Nolan intended. For a director with a film budget higher than most third world countries, you’d expect some of that higher budget to be used for extras and scenery. Some parts of the film look good. Especially the dogfights scenes. But the evacuation of Dunkirk was certainly more than just a few hundred people. Come on Nolan. Even my marching band competition days, there were more band nerds waiting outside of the arena we preformed in than there were soldiers trying to evacuate in your film when the evacuation was somewhere around 338,000 personal. You know some historical re-enactors would do it for free.
I didn’t watch Tenet. Not interesting.
Floppenheimer is a biopic that tells the story about the guy who contributed to the nuclear bomb.
It stars that guy from Peaky Blinders who tries to kill himself and shoots his horse because “That horse was a real fooking racist bruv can’t believe chuddies are racist in pre-WW2 Britian I swear on me mum I’ll fooking blow me brains out if you say the fooking n-word innit” as Oppenheimer who goes on and makes a bunch of mistakes like sleeping with a college chick, cheating on his wife, and then cries foul when the nuclear bomb he made to blow up Germany in WW2 gets used to blow up Japan (with his authorization of course) and then he’s all like “My….BOMB KILLED….PEOPLE….AAAAAAAAHHHH I’M GOING INSANE HELP ME EINSTEIN!” while Harry S. Truman calls him a sissy boy. Other than that, it was kind of overrated. There was no reason to have this filmed on Imax cameras when all the shots are focused on the actors. I respect Nolan for wanting to use practical effects in his films but nuclear bomb scene is a little underwhelming.
And now in 2026, you have The Odyssey staring Travis Scott, the rapper who killed a bunch of kid in his Houston concert while rapping such meaningful phrases as “yeaaaah…..yeaaaah.” with an autotune filter. I won’t see the film unless it’s through some third party pirate link means but only because I want to see if Travis Scott really raps in the film as was rumored. Otherwise, the film looks like total rubbish. The costumes are clearly 3-D printed and they should had hired me if they wanted to make some cheap looking armor. The casting is all over the place and makes no sense in terms of talent nor authenticity. There are no Greeks or Mediterranean actors in this film. It’s an insult to the culture and civilization behind the Odyssey, a story that was canonized into “Western” culture (as in Northern European) when it was actually part of the ancient and classical cultures of Southern Europe, North Africa, Western Asia. Aesthetically it looks like a Sci-Fi film. Agamemnon looks like Batman. I can go on and on but let that be someone else’s job. I’m just here to say the film looks like shit and if his past filmography isn’t telling enough, Nolan is a hack and one of the most overrated directors of our time.
